Pages CMS guide
Task by task, here's how we keep the page text, news, galleries, videos, rinks and the club's information up to date in Pages CMS. For the tasks you do on the website itself, such as changing the schedule, the rosters or Club setup, read the admins' guide.
The club’s everyday changes are made on the website itself, once you are logged in as a club admin or a coach: the schedule and scores, the rosters, the players’ and coaches’ profiles and photos, the announcement bar, testimonials, the teams and seasons, the club’s awards and the rest of Club setup. A change made there shows on every page at once, is checked as you make it, tells the players it concerns, and is recorded with your name. The user guide for club admins describes each of those tasks step by step; this guide does not repeat them.
Pages CMS, a set of plain forms in your browser, keeps what the website does not: the text of the pages, news, photo galleries, videos and the club’s information. This guide covers Pages CMS only. A change made in Pages CMS appears on the site in about two minutes. Every change is recorded, and the webmaster can undo any of them, so a mistake cannot do lasting harm.
Getting started
- Ask the webmaster for an invitation. It arrives by email from Pages CMS. Open the link in the email, then sign in at https://app.pagescms.org with the same email address. If you are asked to choose, choose
kmceagles. - Find your way. The menu on the left lists every section. The sections used most often are at the top; open Page text, Club info and Rarely needed to see the sections inside them. Every box has a short explanation under it. A grayed-out box is filled in automatically. If a box turns red when you save, the message under it explains what to type.
- On the website, a club admin adds you under Rosters › Everyone with your email address and your role, and you log in at kmceagles.org/login/ (see Log in).

When the website cannot save a change
Pages CMS also keeps what the website changes: Schedule, Rosters, People (players and coaches), Announcement banner, Testimonials, League tables, Club info › Club awards, Rinks and venues, and Rarely needed › Seasons and Teams. Use the website for all of them. Change them in Pages CMS only on the rare day when the website says it cannot save a change (for example, while its access key to GitHub is being renewed), and tell the webmaster.
- The fields have the same names as on the website. For one date of a weekly series, use Changed dates in the series, which is what the website’s This date only saves, so that the players’ answers stay with the date.
- Never change a person’s or a rink’s Web address once it is set, because the rosters and the schedule link to it.
- Never enter an email address, a phone number, a rank or a unit: Pages CMS files are public.
- Choose Canceled rather than deleting an event, so that subscribed phone calendars show the cancellation.
- A profile hidden with Show on the website unticked is shown again only here.
News, pages and the guide
- News post: open News, press Add entry, and fill in a title, date, short summary and text. For a game report written here rather than from the game sheet, also fill in Game score, so that the post shows a score picture when it is shared.
- Page text: open the page under Page text. Use the toolbar to add headings, bold text, lists, links and photos. Words in double square brackets, such as
[[min_age]]or[[email]], are replaced with values from Site settings; leave them as they are. - User guide: Page text › User guide holds the whole guide as one document. Each Heading 2 starts a section and appears in the guide’s contents list. When a heading ends in
{#name}, such as “Notifications on your phone {#reminders}”, links to that section keep working after you reword the heading, and the{#name}itself is not shown. Keep those endings, because the “i” buttons and other pages link to them. - Who each section is for: beside the whole guide, the website publishes a shorter guide for players, for coaches and for club admins, each with only its own sections. Page text › User guide: who each section is for has a row for each section, its
{#name}and its readers. When you add a section to the guide, add its row too; until then it shows in all three. - What’s new: with each release, the webmaster or the lead writes a short note for each change under Page text › What’s new: a short name, the date, a title, a sentence or two, whom it is for and, if it belongs to one, the feature. From its date, the website puts each note once in the Inbox of the members it concerns. A note more than 30 days old is never sent, and a note’s short name never changes once it is sent.
- Help buttons: Page text › Help buttons holds the text behind each round “i” button. Keep each one short: what the page is for, a few tips and, at the end, a link to the relevant part of the User guide. Explanations belong there rather than under a section, so that the pages stay short.
Photos
Upload photos under Photos and files: player photos go in headshots and all others in photos. The site automatically makes smaller copies that load quickly. For a gallery, upload the photos, then open Photo galleries and press Add entry. Publish photos only of people who agree to appear in them; each member’s choice is on the website’s Rosters, in the Photos column. A player’s own photo is set on the website (see Everyone), which puts it in the same headshots folder and removes the photo it replaces. Team photos are added under Rarely needed › Teams.
Club information
- Board: under Club info › Club leadership, add one row per role and pick the person from People.
- Fees: edit them under Club info › Dues and fees. Bank details are never published. What each member owes is kept on the website (see Dues).
- FAQ, positions, honors, retired numbers: edit them under Club info, with one row for each item.
- Volunteer roles: edit them under Volunteer needs. Uncheck Show on the Volunteer page when a role is filled.
- Rinks: coaches and admins add and change rinks on the website (see Rinks and venues), where a change shows at once with its map pin. Under Rinks and venues here, only when the website cannot save: add a rink before you add the events that use it. A rink abroad in another time zone gets its Time zone here. Fill in Nearest emergency department (its name and address) and First-aid kit and defibrillator (where they are in the building) only with what someone has checked on site; leave a field empty otherwise. They show on the rink’s page with the emergency number 112, in each event’s Emergency contacts for the coaches, and on members’ phones at the rink. The Setup checklist names the home rink and the practice rinks that still lack them.
- Testimonials from the contact form arrive by email; once the board has read one, add it under Testimonials. Testimonials that members write are published on the website.
A new season
Each yearly job comes to our admins’ Inbox on its day, with a button that opens the tool (see The club’s year), and the next season itself is added on the website (see Club setup). In Pages CMS, bring three things up to date before the season starts: Club info › Dues and fees, Page text › Uniforms, and the practice times in Rarely needed › Site settings › Club facts.
Site settings
- Attendance on the website: Rarely needed › Site settings › Attendance on the website switches the members’ part of the website on and off. Ask the webmaster first. When it is off, attendance returns to the WhatsApp poll, and the schedule, rosters and the rest are changed in Pages CMS.
- Goalie needed: our admins set it on the website, under Club setup › Features › Subs (Goalies needed and We ask for a goalie), and each team can choose for itself (see Goalie asks). The two fields here, Goalies needed per event and Ask for a goalie this many hours before, are only the starting values until an admin chooses in Club setup.
What happens automatically
You do not edit the following; the site produces them from the schedule, the rosters and the people entries.
- Win–loss records, season statistics, ice time and travel distances.
- The season map and the archive of past seasons.
- The league roster, team rosters, alumni lists and retired profiles.
- Calendar subscriptions on members’ phones, including changes and cancellations.
- The next event shown on every page, and a nightly update of the whole site.
- Empty sections stay hidden until there is something to show.
- The website watches its own working once an hour (the reminders, the build, the weekly backup, email, the keys and the free limits) and tells the two webmasters when something breaks, and again when it is fixed. Club › Setup checklist shows it under Health.
Rules
- Never publish email addresses, phone numbers, ranks or units.
- Do not delete events, people, rinks, seasons or teams. Cancel, hide or uncheck them instead.
- The disclaimer in Site settings must stay exactly as it is.
Help
Use the contact form (topic Website problem) or ask the webmaster. Refer players to the user guide for players, and coaches to the one for coaches; the whole User guide has every section.
